The famous Hyena Man of Harar has built enough trust with the local population of spotted hyenas that toursits are able to feed them by hand - and mouth. Yes, this is a very touristy experience, but it’s a great one - and as far as I could tell, it doesn’t harm anyone or anything: the hyenas live in the wild but are habituated; they don’t attack people and people don’t attack them; the hyenas get fed; the Hyena Man makes a living; the tourists get up close and personal with a large predator and walk away with a great new Facebook profile photo. What’s not to like?

The mutual respect between man and hyena in Harar does not extend as far as the city’s canine population, who regularly scrap with these large, powerful predators - and the hyenas often come off the worse for wear.
