Our hitchhiker Ashabi, with a captive gelada baboon in Kete, on the road to Durba, just north of Addis Ababa.
Old Town, Harar - the fourth holiest city of Islam. Harar’s ancient, walled Old Town dates back to the 10th century and contains an estimated 80-90 mosques in just 60 hectares.
The famous Hyena Man of Harar has built enough trust with the local population of spotted hyenas that toursits are able to feed them by hand - and mouth. Yes, this is a very touristy experience, but it’s a great one - and as far as I could tell, it doesn’t harm anyone or anything: the hyenas live in the wild but are habituated; they don’t attack people and people don’t attack them; the hyenas get fed; the Hyena Man makes a living; the tourists get up close and personal with a large predator and walk away with a great new Facebook profile photo. What’s not to like?
